Behavioral Inhibition System Functioning in Anxious, Impulsive and Psychopathic Individuals

چکیده
Summar)-Behavioral inhibition system (BIS) functioning (Gray, The Psychology of Fear and Stress. Cambridge University Press, 1987) was assessed by measuring whether approach responses were emitted more slowly when a cue for punishment was present. Experiment 1 compared highand low-anxious as well as highand low-impulsive university students. As predicted by Gray’s model (Gray, The neuropsychology oj anxiety. New York: Oxford University Press, 1982), high-anxious subjects responded more slowly than low-anxious subjects on cue-present vs cue-absent displays. Experiment 2 compared incarcerated psychopaths and nonpsychopaths subdivided into highand low-anxious groups. Consistent with weak BIS models of psychopathy (Fowles, Psychophysiology, 17, 87-104, 1980; Gray, The psychology qffear and stress, Cambridge University Press, 1987), psychopaths displayed less inhibition than controls on cuepresent trials, but this effect was limited to comparisons involving high-anxious psychopaths and controls. 8 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd

Clarifying the factors that undermine behavioral inhibition system functioning in psychopathy.
Psychopathic individuals are generally unresponsive to motivational and emotional cues that facilitate behavioral regulation. A putative mechanism for this deficiency is Gray’s (1981) behavioral inhibition system (BIS). To evaluate the association between psychopathy and BIS functioning, we administered a laboratory-based assessment of BIS functioning to a group of psychopathic offenders assess...
متن کاملEvidence for unique threat-processing mechanisms in psychopathic and anxious individuals.
Behaviorally, psychopathy and anxiety display opposite patterns of threat sensitivity and response inhibition. However, it is unclear whether this is due to shared or to separate underlying processes. To address this question, we evaluated whether the threat sensitivity of psychopathic and anxious offenders relates to similar or different components of Gray and McNaughton's (2000) Reinforcement...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Mindful Parenting Education on Emotion Regulation and Behavioral Inhibition in Parents with Anxious Children
Introduction: Anxiety is one of the most common psychological disorders that cause problems in emotion regulation and behavioral inhibition. One way to improve parents’ psychological characteristics with psychological disorders, including anxiety, is mindful parenting education. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of conscious parenting education on emotion regulation and behavioral...
متن کاملFactors of the psychopathic personality inventory: criterion-related validity and relationship to the BIS/BAS and five-factor models of personality.
Psychopathy is a personality disorder that includes interpersonal-affective and antisocial deviance features. The Psychopathic Personality Inventory (PPI) contains two underlying factors (fearless dominance and impulsive antisociality) that may differentially tap these two sets of features. In a mixed-gender sample of undergraduates and prisoners, we found that PPI fearless dominance was relate...
متن کاملDifferential Effects of Reward and Punishment Cues on Response Speed in Anxious and Impulsive Individuals
Four groups of subjects-neurotic extraverts, stable extraverts, neurotic introverts, and stable introverts-were instructed to trace a circle template as slowly as possible. The tracing task was performed under one of three conditions: Condition Rw entailed the presence of reward cues, Condition Pn entailed the presence of punishment cues, and Condition G (while involving the presence of goal st...
